2022 Holiday Party

HAPPY HOLIDAYS 2022
Last year we had our Holiday Dinner after the long haul of COVID. This year, although COVID is
still with us, we are gathering again, with some additions. There will be a silent auction of two
baskets, one for U of M and one for MSU, filled with a lot of cool stuff that can be kept or split
up to use as multiple Christmas gifts. Proceeds will go to fund our service awards. We will also
be resurrecting the ornament exchange. Many of you may recall how it works. For those of
you who don’t: if you want to participate, bring an ornament ($15 max.), disguised in a box,
bag, or some other wrapping. Each person participating will choose a number, with number 1
getting the first choice of ornaments. Number two can choose to take the ornament from
number 1 or choose a different one, and so on. There is a limit to how many steals an
individual can endure. This is a fun game (unless someone steals the ornament you cherish, of
course). Our Holiday Dinner traditionally involves the option of bringing a plus one, or more.
WHEN: Thursday, December 1 st , beginning at 5:00 PM.
WHERE: Ruggero’s Italian Restaurant, on Corunna Road. We have a spacious room reserved.
MENU: We will be ordering off the menu.
HOPE YOU CAN ALL ATTEND

President's Report- December 2019

It is already December 5th   and Christmas is less than 3 weeks away.

It seems like everything has moved faster this year.   We have one birthday to celebrate; Carol will chalk up another year on December 19th.

At least one of us has already volunteered at the New Life Center wrapping gifts and several of us are planning on doing so on the 6th.  There will still be opportunities next Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.  According to Patrice it is very well organized.

There is no Business meeting in December, and our January Business meeting will be on the 2nd Thursday, which is January 9th.  Our Holiday Dinner is a week from yesterday, December 12, at Brick Street.  Dinner is at 6:00 PM but we usually start arriving by 5:30. We have 29 people coming to celebrate together and Kathy Holt has done a great job of getting items for our live auction.  Many thanks, Kathy.  I have been told that our auctioneer, who shall remain nameless, will be recovered enough to do her usual great job.  You can send cards of encouragement if you have not already done so.

I hope that each and all of you enjoy a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

President's Report

As of this writing, Ann Beagle has almost completed celebrating her birthday and both Gail Stimson and Jacki Scott are looking forward to birthdays later this month.  Happy Birthday to all.October is behind us.  The Chicken Dinner was very well attended and everyone who was able worked really hard.  We have consensus that we will reduce the number of hours in the future (a decision made at the end of a very busy event) and, since the Temple is taking a larger share of the profit, we will need to consider increasing the cost of tickets next year.  Two attendees expressed an interest in membership.  A complete report will be shared at our Business Meeting on the 7th.
Melissa has already shared, on our web page, the 40 Years of Service Celebration for Barb Rumbel and Carolyn Stubbs on October 17th.   Melissa and Jackie met and Jackie posted on our website about “passing of torch” for administrating the site.  We are really fortunate as a club to have members willing to volunteer time and energy for this, and for everything we do.  A shout out to Renee for boosting our image on Facebook, as well.
We will have a lot of ground to cover at our Business Meeting on the 7th.  I will be attending the Motherly Intercession fundraising dinner on November 9th, and will represent the Club.  For our Program Meeting this month (11/21) we will get in the holiday spirit with a cutthroat Christmas Ornament exchange.  And we can all attend the Interservice Club Luncheon on Friday, November 22nd.  Kathy Holt will have tickets to sell.

I hope each of you and all of us have a great November.

40 Year Member Celebration

Posted by Melissa Taylor on Oct 18, 2019

On Thursday evening, October 17th at our Program Meeting, we celebrated the 40 Year Anniversary of membership to Quota of Flint for our dear friends Barbara Rumbel and Carolyn Stubbs.  Carolyn Boegner had a fun evening planned.  We played a trivia game based on events that occurred in 1979- the year that both Barbara and Carolyn became Quotarians.  There was a lot made of the fact that the person who was 14 years old in 1979 won this trivia contest (ME).  I chalk that win up to the fact that I was a fastidious student learning about world events ....and I am a very good guesser!

Barbara received her 40 year pin.  Unfortunately, Carolyn was not able to attend and will receive her pin at our next gathering.

We enjoyed dinner together, laughed a lot, and were happy to celebrate this milestone with Barbara.

We have great news to share with our members today. Melissa Taylor, our newest member, is becoming the chief administrator of our Quota Website run by the program Clubrunner. After working all day yesterday at her real job, she came to my house for an intense tutoring session on the website. Melissa is a quick learner with lots of good ideas for our website. She is very good with computers too. So, I welcome her with open arms.

If you are experiencing difficulty with our website, you can now go to Melissa for help. I will also remain available to help too. If you bring in a new member, be sure to give that person's information to Melissa so that she can enter them into our website program. Melissa and I will be working together on this project to ensure a smooth transition. You can also help her with the project too. She has a request out there that will help us get to know each other better. It is a good start.

Looking forward to the new future of Quota's website and getting to know Melissa better.

Getting To Know You

Good day ladies!  I am quite excited that this is my first story to publish for our club.  At our planning meeting in August we had a lot of discussion about getting to know one another, where we come from, why we joined Quota,  who introduced us to Quota, and interesting information about ourselves.  I have been making a dedicated effort to move around and sit with different people at meetings to broaden my familiarity with more members.  I am enjoying it immensely.
We would  like to add a story each month in the bulletin featuring one member.  If you would be willing to be a spotlight member one month.please send me an email at meltaylor0683@gmail.com and I will send you a little questionnaire to help you provide information to us along with a picture (hopefully).

I am looking forward to preparing  your story so that we can all learn a little more about one another.

On September 19, a rather raucous group of Quotarians gathered at the Flint Golf Club to celebrate our 75 years as a club. There were four former and one current president in attendance. We acknowledged the recent death of Jackie Oatman, our president from 1980-1981, and remembered her contributions to the club. Former presidents had a lot of history to share which was punctuated with a lot of laughter. After a somewhat challenging cupcake dessert, we were led in the Collect by Susan Schneberger, who is still learning the words, as am I.

October will be a busy month for us. Our Business Meeting is on October 3rd at the Masonic Temple. The Program Dinner is the 17th when we will celebrate Carolyn Stubbs' and Barbara Rumbel's forty years of service. And Sunday the 20th is our annual Chicken Dinner. Hopefully, you have all been selling tickets like crazy, and the dinner will be well attended. The tickets do not have the time on them, but the dinner is from 11:00 - 2:30. ( There are still opportunities to volunteer.) Our 2019 - 2020 Calendar is complete for the big events. The list can be found under Events on our website. Also they have been sent out to members.

Our Communications PR team is doing a great job of putting our name and mission "out there" electronlically. Many thanks.

Wishing each of you and all of us a great October.

Yours in Quota,
Barb Horcha, president

We are less than a week away from our first Business Meeting of the season. We will have a somewhat different format for the meeting, and I am hopeful that we can have more time to enjoy each other's company. That said, we will also need to decide how we want to operate for the next year and complete our calendar. We need dates for our Tea and Trivia Night. I have already sent the minutes from the August 5th planning meeting for you to review, just in case you have not already committed them to memory.

I am hopeful that our CPR group will have a report ( Communications and PR ) and that we have a proposed "elevator talk" to discuss. I will have a sign up sheet for the October 20th Chicken Dinner and tickets to be sold. We did quite well with this event last year. Let's think about selling tickets to our grant recipients as well as family and friends. You should have received a copy of our poster via email.

Finally, a heads up about a movie opportunity. On Thursday, September 12, Flint:The Poisoning of an American City will premier at the Capitol Theater. You can go to www.flintpoisoning.org to buy tickets: $10 for non-residents and free for Flint residents. This movie is going to be released in Baltimore and Atlanta, so far, and maybe other big cities. I will have the flyers at the meeting for anyone interested.

Looking forward to seeing you on the 5th.

Yours in Quota,
Barb

June is halfway through, and summer begins on Friday. We'll see. . . Thursday is the Mystery Dinner, and we are meeting up at Carolyn Boegner's club house at 5:45P.M. If you need directions, you can reach her at (810) 955.2205. Also, a reminder that dues are due by the 30th of this month. I officially began my tenure as president on June 6 at our Business Meeting. Thank you to all who attended. It is truly an honor to serve you, and Carolyn B. made the transition easy.

Our hope for media coverage at the meeting where we awarded grant checks to representatives from FIM, Boys' and Girls" Club, Voices for Children and MSD did not happen then, but I was pleasantly surprised to see articles in the Grand Blanc View and Burton View last week ( June 13, 2019 ) recognizing us and the groups that received funding from us. Since I was still dithering about how to do a press release, it appears that the grant recipients went ahead and did so. Great coverage for all of us.

Barb Rumbel and I drove to Grand Rapids on the 12th to have dinner with our new International Executive Director Nancy Fitzpatrick and representatives from the grand Rapids and Iosco County Clubs along with us,
Great dinner and discussion about Quota and our International Convention next July in Grand Rapids. Nancy said that our group photo is posted on the International Facebook page; it's already on ours. I saw a few familiar faces from Regional Meetings, but Barb Rumbel knew everyone, including the International exec.

At our June meeting, in addition to awarding our grant money, we set a planning meeting for Monday, August 5th at 5:30. Carolyn Stubbs is hosting us, and it will be a potluck meeting; so, think about a dish to pass. The focus of this meeting is to plan creatively for the future and address how we want to move forward as a club.

Finally, our September Program Meeting will be a celebration of 75 years as a club. Our October Program Meeting will be another celebration: 40 years of membership for Carolyn Stubbs and Barb Rumbel. Amazing!

Happy Spring! I think that it is really here. Our club has been enjoying a busy April. There is more fun and excitement in the next few weeks.

Seven of us attended the Region 4 Meeting in Mt. Pleasant. We heard from the international representative and heard reports from the club presidents. It is always interesting to hear what the other clubs do. The focus for the regional meeting was the 2020 International Convention which will be in Grand Rapids. There are some fun side trips planned before and after the convention for those who want to explore Michigan. There will be Quotarians coming from all over the world. Even if you have never attended a convention I hope that you will consider this one. It will be so easy for us, and it will help us to have a better understanding of the Quota mission and organization.

At the business meeting in April, the club approved the revised bylaws. My thanks to the committee who worked on this project. The revised bylaws more accurately reflect the way we are now conducting business. For example, the provision terminating members for non-attendance was deleted.

At our last two program meetings, we have been talking about Quota projects from the 1980s to the present. The trip down memory lane was fun, and the process gave me a better understanding of the evolution of the Flint club.

At the May business meeting, the nominating committee will present the slate of officers. The induction of the new board will take place at the program meeting in May.

It has been an honor to serve as your president. I hope that the club has benefited from my service. I am looking forward to seeing you at the meetings.

Yours in Quota,
Carolyn Boegner

P.S. You can find the revised bylaws and the 2019 President's Report in the Documents section on our website.

Happy Birthday to Quota! One hundred years ago Wanda Frey Joiner started the first service club for women. We will celebrate this milestone at our Program Meeting in March. It will fit in nicely with Women's History Month.

I was sorry to cancel our business meeting in February but with all of the schools in the area closed, it seemed like the right thing to do. The Tresurer's Report and the Minutes from the January meeting are posted in the Documents section on our website. At the March Business Meeting, we will vote on on the proposed by laws that were distributed in January.

On Friday, February 8th, Quota sponsored a table at the Children's Championship Breakfast and some of planned to attend. Hopefully, the road conditions will improve soon.

Kathy Holt has agreed to chair the Service Committee once again. She will be contacting you who signed up for that committee last fall. We know who you are even if you have forgotten!

The Regional meeting is scheduled for Saturday, April 6th in Mt. Pleasant. A draft agenda was distributed a few days ago. The meeting will be one day starting at 9:00 A.M. and ending at 5:00 P.M. There is a block of rooms reserved for Quota for the night before at the Comfort Inn at $114 per room. The telephone number for the hotel is 989.772.4000. When the registration form is available, I will forward it to you.

Our Spring Luncheon is scheduled for April 13th. April will be a busy month;so, I hope that you are planning now for donations for the auctions. It was a hit last year;so, the luncheon will again be at the Holiday Inn.

Happy August!

It seems like the summer just started, and now it is time for the children to get ready to go back to school. Our first grade granddaughter already has her school supplies ready, including her backpack and lunch box. But most of us are not as anxious to see fall closing in.

The big event for me this summer was representing you at the Quota International Convention in Washington D.C. It was my first convention, and it was so much fun to meet with members from around the world. For the opening ceremony, attendees were asked to dress in roaring 20s flapper attire, and you can imagine it was quite a show. At the closing ceremonies the new International President, Emile Simon, and the new board were installed. Dinner was served, and Quota members from the Philippines entertained us with dancing.

The shining moment for the Flint Club was the receipt of a 5K Award for 2018 at the recognitions ceremony on the morning of the final day. The shining moment for the Michigan Region was at the end of the morning when the announcement was made that in 2020 convention will take place in Grand Rapids. Our regional directo, Brenda Chadwick, presented an inspiring invitation, and the rest of the Michigan contingent passed out Michigan goodie bags. We were dressed in our blue "Smitten With the Mitten" tee shirts. It was heartening to hear the positive comments from around the world. Even a few said that they had not planned to attend the 2020, but that they would come to Michigan.

Since I enjoyed my convention experience so much, I hope that all of you will be able to attend in 2020. Our President Elect Carol Patin is from Louisiana, and I am expecting a unique celebration after her installation. There will be activities in the days before and after the convention that would give you the opportunity to do a little sight-seeing and to make some new friends. Mark your calendars for Julu 9. 2020.

Thank you for the opportunity to represent you at the convention. It truly was a wonderful experience. I feel more educated about Quota. The speakers had inspiring messages. The workshops presented some helpful ideas. There were members with unique stories. And I shared some tea party ideas with a Pennsylvania club.

One good thing about September approaching is that it will be fun to see all of you again at our business meeting. We have a lot to talk about. First on the agenda will be a discussion of the new mission statement that was adopted at the convention. I have been working on our calendar for 2018 - 2019 and will have it ready for you. Please make sure that you have September 6th at noon on your calendar.

See you in September!

Yours in Quota,
Carolyn Boegner

Happy June!

Believe it or not, it is June! I hope that you had a happy and safe Memorial Day, and that you are coping well with the quickly changing weather that is Spring in Michigan.

We look forward to seeing you at our June Quota activities. Our last Business Meeting before summer break will be this Thursday, June 7th. On the 16th, we are hosting a Trivia Tournament at the Flint Institute of Music. On the 21st, we will gather for our Mystery Dinner. I don't want to give anything away ;so, I will just say that the destination meets the criteria that we try to meet - ample parking, barrier free, varied menu, moderate pricing, alcohol available, and of course good food. If you have not yet signed up. please call me.

Some of us are preparing for the trip tp the Quota International Convention in Washington D.C. in July. Our club has five members attending this year. For the opening ceremony, we are supposed to dress like flappers which should be fun. I will try to take some photographs to share. It is my first convention; so. I am pretty excited. I plan to come back with lots of ideas to help me guide our club through my last year as president.

I recently sent my President's Report to Quota International, and I am reminded of how proud I am of our members.

Thanks to all you for your dedication to Quota.

President Carolyn

After trying to have a Trivia Night in February that was cancelled by horrible weather, we came up with a new weather-perfect date, June 16th. Susan Schneberger is in charge of this event. If you would like to make donations or volunteer, she is the lady to contact. Carolyn Stubbs is helping too. This is really a fun event. Participants are encouraged to choose a theme and decorate their table of eight. You can even dress up yourself for your theme. Bring your own goodies to eat and drink. Please let Carolyn Stubbs know if you have a table, the sooner the better. Hope to have a great turnout! Some people are intimidated by trivia, but not our group. We attend because it is so much fun.

 Happy 2018!

I hope that your year started well. For me, January has been filled with making plans. It is good for the spirit to look forward to adventures.

My plans for 2018 include the Quota Regional Meeting in East Lansing in April and the International Convention in July in Washington D.C. I have made my reservations and hope that you will too. It is a good opportunity to connect with our Quota roots and have a good time with our Quota sisters.

Many thanks to our members who spent their time or made donations for our service projects in December. In keeping with the spirit, mark your calendars for our next day at the Food Bank on April 14th. Also, Kathy Holt will be coordinating our efforts for the FIM HeadStart Program. It will be fun to spend some time with the little ones.

We have Trivia coming up on February 10th;so, round up your family and friends. If you can, please donate gift cards or cash for the prizes.

We have a date for the Spring Tea/Luncheon - Saturday, April 21st. We are using a new venue. Cathy Moore will give us the details in the February Business Meeting. April will be a busy month; so, please start thinking now about filling up tables. This is our biggest fundraiser of the year. We need donations of items for our live and silent auctions.

As always, your time and commitment are appreciated. We will see you February 1st at the Business Meeting.

Yours in Quota,

Happy Holidays!

We enjoyed a fun holiday celebration at Brick Street last Thursday. The food was good, and the party room was decked out for the season. It was a great way to get into the holiday mood. We has a fun auction, and thanks to the generosity of members, we were able to add some funds to our treasury.

We we have been busy with our December service projects. If you have some time to donate, we will be wrapping gifts at the New Life Center every day from 10:00 A.M. until 2:00P.M., and we will be supervising cookie decorating at the Weiss Advoccy Center on Thursday, December 14th at noon. The Flint Youth Theater needs ushers for their December production which runs through the 17th. The President's Message

Many thanks to our Quota members who contributed so much of their time and effort to our recent events. Special thanks to Lucille Bigelow for chairing the Food Bank service project, Susan Schneberger for chairing the Trivia Night, and to Barbara Horcha for chairing the Chicken Dinner. All of the events were a success. It was gratifying to see so many of our members and their friends and relatives working for the good of the club and its mission. We will be looking forward to the final reports.

We had a lot going on in October. For those who are feeling a little overwhelmed, this is a good time to consider which of your friends and relatives are potential Quotarians. What do you enjoy about Quota? Why do you continue your membership? Something keeps you coming back. That is the message you want to share with others. We are doing good work but imagine what we could do with more members.

In the middle of our busy October, we met at the Flint Golf Club for the White Elephant Auction, It was clear that this is an activity that members enjoy. I am glad that we kept it on the calendar. We always appreciate the opportunity to add some cash to our treasury while we are having fun.

In November we will be doing an ornament exchange at the Flint Golf Club. If you want to participate, bring a wrapped ornament. Notice will be emailed. Please RSVP promptly.

Please remember that we are donating a basket of Christmas themed goodies to the Weiss Advocacy Center for their silent auction. Donations must be in by the November Business Meeting on the 2nd of November. Also, reservations must be in by the day of the Ornament Exchange. Finally, donations for the auction at the Holiday Dinner will be gratefully accepted.

Thanks again for everything you do for Quota.

Yours in Quota,
Carolyn BOegner

The President's Message

Posted by Carolyn Boegner on Sep 17, 2017
story thumbnail
Welcome back!! I hope that September finds you rested and ready for the busy Quota year ahead.

It was good to see so many of you at the September business meeting last week. Pursuant to our discussions last year, we have been investigating service projects. The highlight of the business meeting was the report from Lucille Bigelow and her committee on recommended service projects. All of their recommendations met with the approval of the club. Lucille will be in charge of coordinating a project putting together gift baskets with The New Life Center which will be in late November or early December. Pam Nelson will coordinate with the North End Soup Kitchen. Cathy Moore and Barb Horcha will coordinate some events with the Child Advocacy Center. We will keep you posted on dates.

I want to thank the Board Members who came together September 9th, a Saturday morning. We had a very productive meeting which will help to get our club off to a good start. One point of discussion was the meeting schedule. Even though we decided last year that we would reduce the number of evening meetings, we know that some of the activities we might lose are important. We decided to continue our tradition of the white elephant auction in October and an ornament exchange in November. These will be the usual time and place of evening meetings.

Enjoy the warm weather that is predicted in the next week. See you on the 21st at 6:00P.M. at the Flint Golf Club for our program meeting.

Lucille Bigelow will be leading our members to volunteer at the Food Bank on Saturday, May 20th. We will be working from 9:00A.M. to noon. If you did not have a chance to sign up, you can come anyway. Students can use this for their volunteer requirements at school too. Bring your family, friends, and neighbors. everyone is welcome!

The visit to the Food Bank was a great success. The members worked on the donations brought in by the Postal Service from their annual appeal for donations. When organizations volunteer, they can donate vouchers to a specific  organization. This year our donation went to the St. Luke Catholic Organization in Flint. It is called The New Life Center. At this center, women are taught to sew, and scrubs are made for the hospitals. The nuns and their volunteers also go out and give food and clothing for the homeless in northern  Flint.

Our dear Jeanne Clark took a fall on Mother's Day. She is currently in Genesys Hospital in Grand Blanc. The doctors are trying to decide whether they are going to do surgery or not. When she fell, she severely damaged both shoulders. The good news is that she has been moved from ICU to a regular room. We will keep you posted. Her computer does not work anymore;so, it is best to send a card or call her. Jeanne told Lucille that she was worried about the Food Bank on Saturday. You see she was always in charge of these visits in the past. Jeanne is a true Quotarian.

Do not worry if you are not good at trivia. Trust us, nobody is. You will have a great time and lots of laughs. Each table has eight chairs. Susan is the chair, and she needs gift certificates for $25 and $15. These are for the for the first place and second place winners. You can bring them to our meetings or call Susan and arrange to get them to her at another time. Thanks for your help as always.
